Court decisions provide the foundation for the rules of construction used to fix or determine the location of boundaries and property rights. This workshop will discuss the facts, findings, and ramifications of recent cases that are relevant to surveying. Based on Knud’s legal and surveying experience, he will provide insight into the decisions and the extent and manner the cases should be used by the survey practitioner.

MassDOT ARAN Truck Demonstration* The ARAN is a highly sophisticated pavement distress-measuring vehicle, which is capable of collecting large quantities of pavement data at highway speeds. During this session you will learn how this technology is used to evaluate roadway pavement condition and identify potential rehabilitation projects. The use of the ARAN in both network and project level analysis continues to be a key tool enabling MassDOT maintain pavements in an efficient and cost effective manner

Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE)* This session will provide a practical overview of Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE). Bob will discuss the need for subsurface utility engineering as well as the technologies and practices utilized in this specialty. H will also examine the development and intent of Standard Guidelines for the Collection and Depiction of Existing Subsurface Utility Data.
Accuracy and Precision* Explore some of the basic to advanced error sources in modern surveying measurements. From senior surveyors to apprentices, Mark will provide methods for identifying, minimizing and avoiding error in acquired survey data. 2:00 – 2:30 PM: Mid-Afternoon Break with Exhibitors

8:30 – 10:00 AM: Concurrent Sessions Easements create conflict because “It may be your easement, but it’s my land!” Easements are created in different ways: prescriptive (adverse) use, necessity, implication, estoppel, statute, eminent domain, dedication, common scheme. Deeded easements may not be locatable on the ground, or of undefined width. Title by adverse possession is illegal trespass continued for 20 years, like keeping robbery loot once the statute of limitations expires. Gold Mines, Baselines, and Meridian Lines* Gary will discuss his early surveying experience with Gold claims in Colorado using Celestial Observations (Polaris and Solar), Baselines including Prime Meridians in the US, London, Paris and Athens. Meridian lines in Italy for changing the calendar in 1582 and the Meridian line in Paris for determining the tilt of the earth's axis in the 1700's
